It's a case that stays around the DS permanently (unless you remove it) so that it is protected at all times. It doesn't affect play at all. I have to say that we learned the hard way also. My son borrowed my DS (yes I had a DS, I'm a Sudoku addict, there, I said it). My son dropped it on a cement floor. We were able to get a Nerf case for it and nandle it gently for awhile, but eventually it died. I have a new one now, I didn't even take it out of the box until I got the Nerf case.
